Spring Cleaning Season Is Here, How to Score the Best Deals on Canadian Marketplaces Right Now

April is when Canadians purge their homes, and that means the best secondhand deals of the year are hitting Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace right now.

Every year, somewhere between the last snowfall and the first patio beer, Canadians collectively decide it's time to get rid of everything. Spring cleaning season is the single best window to buy secondhand, and if you're not paying attention right now, you're leaving serious money on the table.

Why April Is the Golden Month

There's a predictable rhythm to Canadian marketplace listings. January brings a flood of barely-used fitness equipment (New Year's resolution casualties). Summer brings patio furniture. But April through mid-May is when the floodgates truly open.

People are clearing out garages, basements, and spare rooms. They're motivated to sell fast because they want the stuff *gone*, not because they're trying to maximize profit. That motivation is your leverage.

Right now on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace in the Windsor area, we're seeing spikes in:

  • Furniture, dining sets, bookshelves, dressers people upgraded over winter
  • Kids' gear, strollers, cribs, and clothes from families whose children have outgrown them
  • Small appliances, bread makers, air fryers, instant pots bought on impulse and used twice
  • Winter sports equipment, skis, snowboards, and hockey gear listed at end-of-season lows
  • Power tools, people clearing out workshops or sheds

Five Tips to Win During Spring Cleaning Season

1. Search early and often. The best deals don't last 48 hours. Set up alerts on Kijiji and check Facebook Marketplace at least twice a day. Listings posted on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings tend to be priced most aggressively, people want a clean start to the week.

2. Look for bundle listings. When someone posts "everything must go" or lists multiple items at once, they're in purge mode. Offer to take several items and you'll almost always get a better per-item price.

3. Don't lowball, but do negotiate. There's a difference between a respectful offer and insulting someone. A good rule: offer 15–20% below asking on items that have been listed for more than three days. If it's been up for over a week, you have even more room.

4. Ask the right questions before you drive. Request photos of any damage, ask how old the item is, and confirm dimensions. Nothing wastes time like showing up and realizing a couch won't fit through your door.

5. If you can't go yourself, send someone you trust. This is exactly why we built aerrand. Our Aerranders will go inspect the item in person, confirm it matches the listing, and deliver it to you, with your payment held in escrow until you're satisfied. It's particularly useful for furniture and electronics where photos can be deceiving.

The One Mistake Most Buyers Make This Time of Year

FOMO buying. The volume of great listings in April creates a kind of secondhand shopping frenzy. Before you commit, ask yourself: Do I actually need this, or is it just cheap? A $40 bread maker is no deal if it sits in your own basement until next April's purge.

Buy intentionally, negotiate respectfully, and inspect before you pay. Spring cleaning season rewards the patient and the prepared.

Happy hunting, Windsor.
